What is neuropsychology?

Neuropsychology is a discipline that studies the relationships between the brain, cognitive functions and behaviour. It helps to better understand memory, attentional, language, executive and emotional difficulties, particularly in the context of neurological, psychiatric or neurodevelopmental conditions.

What is a neuropsychological assessment?

A neuropsychological assessment is a detailed evaluation of a person's cognitive, behavioural and psycho-affective functioning at a given point in time. It aims to answer a precise clinical question: objectifying and characterising a cognitive complaint, guiding differential diagnosis, tracking the evolution of difficulties or identifying the functional impact of observed problems. It is intended for adolescents aged 16 and over, adults and older people with cognitive, psycho-affective or behavioural difficulties, particularly in the context of neurological, neurodevelopmental or psychiatric conditions, in order to better understand their functioning and guide care.

The three stages of the neuropsychological assessment

  1. 01

    Clinical interview - mandatory step

An initial consultation of approximately one hour to gather the patient's clinical history, the reason for referral and everyday difficulties in order to guide the neuropsychological assessment.

  2. 02

    Test administration

Approximately three hours of standardised tests selected according to the clinical question, the patient's age and sociocultural level, in order to obtain an adapted and thorough evaluation of cognitive functioning.

  3. 03

    Feedback

A consultation of approximately one hour to present and explain the results of the neuropsychological assessment and answer questions. A detailed written report along with care recommendations are provided at the end of the assessment.
